Spartan considers literary prose submissions of fifteen hundred words or less. Please read an issue before submitting. We accept simultaneous submissions, with the request that we are notified immediately if a piece is accepted for publication elsewhere. We do not accept multiple submissions, except in the case of linked micro fictions and/or prose poems. For linked micro fictions, the entire series must be two thousand words or less. SPECIAL ISSUE #11: "Hope in Renewal" (An Intermission) Lives around the world have been disrupted by the current situation. We wait in limbo for what might lie ahead in our own homes and outside our doors. And though we'll be documenting it for months and years to come,  Eastern Iowa Review  is sending out a call for writing and artwork in April focused on "hope in renewal." We welcome many interpretations of "hope," and realize not everything hopeful will be bright and shiny. They are an online magazine devoted to flash fiction. They even have a feature called Micro Interviews. New Flash Fiction Review hosts an annual award honoring a master short-short storyteller Anton Chekhov:   The Anton Chekhov Prize for Very Short Fiction --reading through July 15th.

Readers of this blog know that I often post about memories. I've blended the art of flash with memoir to come up with flash memoir. Memoir, unless you've had a ridiculously exciting life--such as people who survive a bridge collaps e--most of us lead lives of quiet desperation--even Thoreau's life was made up of unmemorable experiences. The ordinary, the mundane. And what can be more ubiquitous or mundane than a pigeon. Here in the city we call them flying rats. There's nothing special about them--mainly because they're EVERYWHERE. 87 Bedford We’ll take any great story that can be classified under the umbrella of commercial or genre fiction (romance, mystery, crime, etc). What gets us excited is speculative fiction in all its guises (fantasy, science-fiction, magic realism, surrealism, slipstream, urban fantasy, horror, steampunk, silk punk, cyberpunk, etc). Flash Fiction We define flash fiction as stories between 500 to 1000 words. Submitted stories that fall within these limits will automatically be classified as flash. Just like a great short story, a great piece of flash ought to impress us with finesse throughout its entirety, instead of hinging solely on an unexpected twist at the end. Micro Fiction For a bigger (or smaller) challenge, send us a work of micro fiction (less than 100 words). Be sure it still tells a “complete story” that has a beginning-middle-end with conflict and resolution.
