5.0 stars Wonderful coming of age story, set in rural Ohio during the Iran hostage crisis
This is a funny, moving, beautifully written book. The main character's family is dirt poor, Appalachia poor, permanently poor--yet the three generations of his family living together in a trailer in the hills love each other, take care of each other, and are willing to fight fiercely for each other. His world expands when he is accepted to school in "town," and expands even more when he befriends the other new kid--the son of an Iranian scientist newly arrived at the local university. Their friendship grows while, in the background, the Iran hostage crisis plays out. I can't recommend this book enough--there are scenes that will make you laugh hard, and lovely and original and unexpected characters.
