Two Steps Forward, One Step Back
Two Steps Forward, One Step Back
dedicated to Keith Wasserman and Lynda Moody, two old college friends
Is still going forward; I’m still moving.
So there is bare ground starting to show outside. The temps have warmed up, a bit. I rode my bike 3x in one week. I ran twice.
This is progress.
The sun comes up earlier and sets later—after 6 these days.
*Yet, last week I locked my keys in the car (one step back) but Chad from Okemos Marathon came in a jiffy and got things straight (one step forward).
*I was cleaning my water reservoir and got too vigorous and broke a piece. No biggy—until a few days later I discovered a lake flooding my countertop. (One step back!) Yesterday I ordered a slim 27-cup Brita from Walmart and the online option said delivery was same-day and free. Altogether, it was much less than I thought it would be to replace. I went out and met the drivers in my driveway, a couple out on a nice day in their KIA making stops. I asked is this a side gig and they said, yeah. Good for you! (One step forward. Other folks are rewarded as well!)
I definitely appreciate getting rid of the clunky, metal 100-cup coffee urn (overkill, never needed that much water) and love the freed-up counter space and appearance of the Brita which will actually need less maintenance.
*I’d made an appointment with the dermatologist and went on a frigid morning EARLY where they scrapped it off—not sure if one step forward or back. It hurt like hell even with the numbing and I cried. They said it was pre-cancer and they would biopsy it. Again, what category? But upon reflection as I drove home, the sun fully up and nearly blinding me: What in life isn’t pre-cancer? I mean, until it is cancer, everything is pre-cancer. I await the results.
*I worked over a year on a pair of cross stitch projects. Winter scenes, one with a snowy owl and the other a little red fox crossing a snowy field. Both featured moonlight. I bought 12 x 12 frames—all on sale! So far so good. (One step forward.)
What’s the adage: Measure twice cut once?! They’re a pair, right? I measured the first set and carefully cut. Then figured I could simply replicate my efforts on the second cross stitch. Son of a bitch! Not an exact pair!! (One step back.) I felt like tearing my eyes out of my head—the same eyes I’d recently had to have fitted for glasses. (I’m 67 and finally coming into having to wear eyeglasses. One step—oh, shut up.) Anyway, I cut a mat freehand and placed it over the mangled cross-stitch and it actually looked better in the frame—though I’ll never know since I can only imagine what it might have looked like if I hadn’t cut it too short.
**
All this to say: Everything worked out. I saved money and spent just as much. I won and lost, and still came out ahead. All is good. So far. In the end.
