Day 6, Aigert - Ammarnas, 8 km

Before I left my friends all told me: Don't die. I know, it's usually bon voyage. But in this instance: solo backpacking in the mountains of northern Sweden there was actually a chance I could die.

But instead I had the time of my life.

Yesterday, upon arrival I was again offered lingonberry juice and a chat on the front deck. Some others whom I've been hiking with since Viterskalet were concerned about my leg, but I told them I was fine. I hadn't had to blow my whistle.

In my fanny pack I have a small whistle, just in case.

Before I left my friend and workmate Marilyn gave me a small oblong crystal to take with me. She didn't say it was for good luck or contained special powers, but it was more a journeying stone meant to let me know that I am loved and being thought of. After I fell, I felt it in my pocket. Still there! Whatever aura it has, it worked.

This a.m., as is my wont, I was up early in order to pack with a mind towards pulling to the top stuff I might want on my 6-hour bus ride and 9 hour train trip. I ate a breakfast where I used up my last bag of ramen and spaghetti sauce from the night before.

Aigert had a shop where I cracked folks up, saying I was having my restaurant meal. The can had a picture of spaghetti and meatballs. Imagine my surprise and despair when I discovered it was only one of those two things. The hut warden took pity on me and gave me some of his pasta since the shop didn't have any. The can of meat sauce was about 8 dollars. My restaurant meal.

So this morning I ate what I called leftover end of the trail potluck.

I started at 8 a.m. and just like at the beginning, I bookended my hike by wandering around trying to find my way onto the Kungsleden. Finally a German girl popped out of the porto and pointed me in the right direction. Sheesh.

There were waterfalls and spectacular views, but I was also looking at my feet. There were stumbling stone and tripping roots. I did not want on my last day to be carried off the trail.

And that's about it. Got to the end of the trail where I continued onto a dirt track that led to a parking lot for hikers and then turned left to walk on the roadway to a well-placed bus stop with picnic tables, water, and electrical outlets. Across the street was a small grocery store and in the other direction a little café where I used the bathroom. I bought bread and cream cheese for my long journey.

My first bus connection is approximately one hour to Soreselle, then onto Ostersund. In Soreselle there were public restrooms at the bus station and next door was a bigger grocery store where I bought a banana, orange juice, and a yummy donut with Oreo cookie crumbs on top.

I think I'm catching up with calories.
