City                                                        On Vacation

 

wake up to sirens                                  woken up by noisy birds

 

stuffy, recycled air                                 breathe deep, fill your lungs, fresh clean crisp

 

morning shower                                     morning swim

 

tasteless tomatoes                                  farmstand tomatoes, warm from the sun

 

call maintenance when sink clogs         plunge it, try Draino, then call a neighbor

 

the whirl of helicopters overhead         listening to crickets, the buzz of big bumble bees, their                                                     

                                                                        stoney bodies hitting the glass door

 

mouse gets inside                                   mouse gets inside

 

humid                                                     same

 

figure out a time to meet                        long and endless days, just stop by

 

cars double-parked                                canoes and kayak tied up at the dock

 

the books you’ll get to                           days spent reading in the hammock

 

at night, the city comes alive                 go to bed early after a rowdy sunset

 

the lights at Wrigley glow                     fireflies in the tall pines put on a show

 

traffic leaving town                               not looking forward to long queues into the city
